A review of a new restaurant in Old Town called Elaine’s. Elaine’s Restaurant, which is tucked just two blocks from King Street and one block from the Waterfront, features delicious Mediterranean cuisine surrounded by a clean, calm, and casual atmosphere. Elaine’s Restaurant, street view Opened in March of this year, Elaine’s is a small business; this one in Old Town is its only location. The restaurant is named after the owner, Cynthia Higgins’, grandmother. According to Higgins, when she was a child in Cairo, Egypt, she spent a lot of time cooking with her grandmother. 2023 Budget Proposal: Paucity of Psychologists
ACPS’s new budget proposal highlights the continued student need for effective administrative techniques and school resources. To address the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on ACHS students, administration and faculty have implemented policies to ease stress since 2020. For example, during the 2021-22 academic year, students could not lose points for submission of late work up to two weeks after the due date. Additionally, final exams that did not raise their grade were exempt from students’ final grade reports.

Campus Disconnect: Six Students Speak Out
Unbeknownst to some, Alexandria City High School (ACHS) diverges into four separate campuses: King Street, Minnie Howard, Chance for Change (CFC), and Satellite. Though the King Street Campus is only one of four, many see it as the center point, with the other three campuses acting as subdivisions, rather than existing as four interconnected bodies. This heavy disconnect has separated each campus to the point of being identified as four different high schools, despite them all bearing the title “Alexandria City High School.” To address the unique experience that each campus offers, six students were interviewed on their perspectives as a student from each campus.

One Slight Hitch, the Titan Theater Department’s Fall Play, was performed this fall quarter. The play-comedy written by comedian Lewis Black tackled family relationships and internal conflict interwoven with political commentary about the American Dream.

Meeting the New Superintendent: Dr. Kay-Wyatt
After a tumultuous school year, Alexandria City Public School’s Superintendent Gregory Hutchings announced on June 10 that he would not renew his contract after nearly four years. His official resignation came into effect on August 31. Starting September 1, Melanie Kay-Wyatt serves as the interim superintendent through the 22-23 school year or until the school board can appoint an eligible candidate into the permanent position.
