After two years with a slowly rejuvenating movie industry, 2023 is bursting with many long-awaited titles. Sequels, Marvel Stage 5 and Disney adaptations will soon be filling our theaters.
This year is rich with sequels, trilogies or fully formed franchises. Two Marvel trilogies, Antman and the Wasp Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, are gaining their third parts. Both have been well received in the past and are among students’ most highly anticipated movies.
“[Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3] is part of an overarching story, and it’s been several years since the last installment,” said senior Owen Maccubbin, “so I’m curious to see what comes next.”
DC is also releasing the second Aquaman movie, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Similarly, other large franchises are adding installments in 2023, such as Indiana Jones 5 and The Fast and The Furious 10.
Disney is also having a big year with the releases of Peter Pan and Wendy, Disney’s Haunted Mansion and the long-awaited live-action Ariel.
“Disney’s live-action interpretations of movies can be very hit or miss, and I would love to find out which one Ariel will be,” said junior Maikol Centeno.
This year is rich with revivals of well-known stories and characters. Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie takes a new spin on a long-loved character. Likewise, Rhys Waterfield’s Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, is an adaptation of the newly public domain classic Winnie the Pooh stories. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also coming out this year, boasting a star-studded cast with Chris Pratt, Jack Black and Anya Taylor-Joy.
It’s a big year for actor Timothée Chalamet with the releases of the long-awaited Dune Part 2 and the unique Wonka. Both films have long trials of books and films— some well-received and others not as much— but we’ll just have to wait and see what this year’s adaptations bring to the table.
The year is certainly not a boring one for movie aficionados, and even those who don’t keep up with every new release are sure to find something to enjoy.
