Earth Day 2022: What Students Do To Stay Environmentally Friendly
Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 and marks the anniversary of the beginning of the modern environmental movement in 1970 promoting a national standard of cleanliness. This year, Earth Day recognizes the devastating effects of climate change, especially human-induced impacts on the environment. The rising global temperatures, sea levels, and carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are all effects of climate change. But Earth Day also acknowledges the changes people implement in their life to protect the environment. This year, students were asked what they do every day to protect the environment.

Jazz Band Takes Top Prize
On Friday, May 13, Alexandria City High School's jazz band competed in the Chantilly Jazz Festival (one of the oldest and most prestigious in the DMV region). Jazz Band "A" won first place and Jazz Combo won 2nd place.

Lionel Richie Wins The Gershwin Prize in DC
On March 7, 2022, Lionel Richie won the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The Gershwin Prize for Popular Song acknowledges songwriters that have spent their life dedicated to their craft and celebrates songwriters' achievements in music. This award is truly a milestone artists can only dream of achieving. The previous winners include Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, and Carole King. This year, the Library of Congress awarded Lionel Richie the award to commemorate the accomplishments in his lifetime.

Five Alexandria City High School students participated in the All-Virginia Band & Orchestra Event on April 21-23 at Christopher Newport University (CNU). This event brings the state’s best student musicians together in one location to work with world-renowned conductors.

Mick Heller has worked as Theogony’s Consulting Adviser for the past five years. Prior to volunteering for ACHS he worked as a sports copy editor at The Washington Post for 15 years. Before that he worked as a news and sports writer for The Baltimore Sun and The Washington Times.

City Confronts Tension Between Historic Preservation And Flood Mitigation
New walkways, grassy pavilions, and restaurants in recent years have led to a tourist revival along Alexandria’s Potomac waterfront. But city officials and business leaders know this new energy is threatened by an old problem: chronic flooding that regularly puts big sections of Old Town deep underwater. Although Potomac flooding has been a fact of life in Old Town since pre-colonial days, a combination of climate change and regional development has made the problem more frequent and severe.

Alexandria City High School offers a plethora of art classes to satisfy each student's needs. The school offers nine classes: Art I, Art II, Art III, Art IV, Ceramics I, Ceramics II, AP 2-D Art & Design, AP 3-D Art & Design, and AP Drawing Portfolio. Every year, thousands of schools across the country compete as ‘Science Olympiads,’ putting their knowledge and skills to the test as they formulate, create, and innovate a variety of devices within the field. With Science Olympiads on track to garner similar popularity to its Mathletes counterpart, Alexandria City High School has recently created its own division, ready to participate in all levels of competition.
