The 2022 Major League Baseball season was indefinitely postponed on March 1 after MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was upset that other important figures were allowed to travel to space, and he was not. He stated that he would only resume the baseball season after the MLB Players Association Executive Director, Tony Clark, negotiated a way for him to travel to the stars.
Spring training traditionally starts in mid-February but was blocked by Manfred after being told by Clark that it was a ridiculous idea to want to see the moon, Manfred’s favorite celestial orb. Clark stated, “It’s all those stupid celebrities wanting to travel to space; why does he want to go? And why does this affect me and my players?”
The MLB players have begged Clark to talk to his close friends Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos to convince them to punch Manfred’s ticket to space so that their season could resume. Tampa Bay Rays player Dusten Knight encourages, “I understand that it’s stupid, but if that is what Rob [Manfred] wants to let us play again, just give it to him.”
Even celebrities have chimed in on the baseball lockout. Avid baseball fan Kanye West, who proposed at a San Francisco Giants game to his ex-wife, stated, “I don’t think Clark is wrong here. People need to start sticking up for themselves. Space is stupid. People like Pete Davidson go to space, and if Rob [Manfred] wants to be stupid, then he should figure it out on his own, don’t involve Tony [Clark] …”
After a supervised meeting with both Manfred and Clark’s lawyers, Clark caved and made a deal that Manfred could be on the next trip of Elon Musk’s SpaceX shuttle so that he could resume the baseball season. Spring training started on March 17, and opening day, which will take place after Manfred’s flight, will be April 7, 2022.
