Mrs. Maggie Tran is the Academy Six Principal at ACHS. She had previously worked as a high school history teacher, which was a decision that came naturally to her. “My parents were really into history…and I always enjoyed working with children…and people,” she said. “I find the study of history incredibly important, and something that really helped me make sense of the world…I still apply that to my life today.”

Tran grew up in Upstate New York and moved to Winchester, Virginia for most of her childhood. “ I know what it feels like to move and…to put yourself out there, and show your vulnerabilities,” she said. “It also has led me to really value long term friendships and strong relationships.”

After attending high school in Winchester, she got her undergraduate degree at Appalachian State University. Then, she went on to get a graduate degree in educational policy and philosophy from the University of Virginia, and an educational specialists degree from Virginia Tech. Later she taught high school AP US History for 22 years.

After teaching for a while, she decided it was time for a change. “ I loved my years teaching, and I find the study of history incredibly important,” she said. “But I felt like I had done what I needed to do in the classroom…it was time to try and make a greater impact if I could.

In her work, Tran has a specific guideline she lives by. “I have a rule at work which is to do the little things well,” she said. “Because, if you do the little things well, you develop a sense of credibility with people. For example, showing up on time, sending an email…just basically being dependable…and then when the big things come, it’s easier if you mess up, because people know that you are dependable at least.”

Outside of her work, she also has a rule for her life in general. “My rules to live by for my life is to recognize the gratitude…for the fortunate life that I have,” she said.
