Over the pandemic with everyone in quarantine and the rise of the popular social media platform, TikTok, fashion trends have been evolving and changing faster than ever. The constant changes in style can be difficult to keep up with. Specifically, styling the color brown and wearing milkmaid dresses, trends that skyrocketed in popularity due to TikTok.
In 2020, the color brown stole the fashion scene. TikTok heightened its influence and soon, the app and other platforms became saturated with color. Brown is a neutral color, which makes it a good base. When styled right, it can be a statement color too.
Styling brown is easy. First, consider some complementary colors like off-white or cream, white, muted shades of green, forest green, and other shades of brown. If the statement piece of clothing is brown, go for a more subtle color like white or off-white to ensure the brown is the center of attention. For a monochrome outfit, use different shades and tones of brown and layer them. Start with a simple base like a shirt and pants and add pieces like jackets, crewneck sweaters, knit sweaters, or blazers to create dimensions in the outfit. Brown seems to be a popular trend and will likely be around for a while for an overall neutral look. Luckily, the color goes with many pieces you probably already have!
Another popular piece is “milkmaid dresses”. This style of dress is a great piece of clothing because it practically builds the outfit for you. These dresses are usually knee to ankle length and have either ruching or lacing in the front. Milkmaid dresses are already a statement on their own, so styling them is pretty easy. In colder months, wearing a turtleneck or mock neck underneath or a cardigan of a complimenting color can upgrade the look of this dress while fitting it to your needs.
Big, platform shoes like Dr. Martens or any platform shoe can also add a bit of dimension to this piece. If you are looking for a more dainty look, you can add fun socks with ruffles or lace. Dresses like these are easy to style since they already have so much charm. It is all about accessorizing them.
As TikTok and social media constantly evolve our view of fashion , it is important to wear what you want and what makes you the most comfortable regardless of what is “in” at the moment.
