Breaking Down the Action-Packed New Netflix Show
By Katie Vastola and Norah Ludke
“Two tribes one island.” Perfectly sums up new Netflix show, Outer Banks. The quote sums up the underlying problem the show is based on, a major difference in social class. After being released on April 15, 2020, The show climbed up Netflix’s top ten most-watched shows to first by May 5, 2020. There is only one season currently streaming on Netflix and rumors of a season two have already started.
The TV show stars Chase Stokes (John B.), Madelyn Cline (Sarah Cameron), Madison Bailey (Kiara), Jonathan Davis (Pope), and Rudy Pankow (JJ) as the main characters. Outerbanks follows the lives of theese teenagers as they deal with mystery and adventure. We both thought it was an amazing show, it keeps you entertained and we felt that there was never a dull moment. Here is all the information you need to know about Outerbanks.
On the island there are two types of people split into social categories, there are the “Kooks” who are the wealthier class, and the “Pogues” which are the working class. There has always been tension between the two groups and it only gets amplified throughout the show.
The Pogues go on an adventure trying to solve the mystery of John B.’s father’s disappearance. While searching for answers about his father they end up trying to finish a treasure hunt that he had started before he disappeared. The show keeps you interested and always intrigued. The ending has many cliffhangers which make the viewers assume there will be a season two eventually.
Each character has their personality trait that is completely polar opposite to the others. John B. is considered the leader of the group and he is the one searching for his father who was lost at sea. JJ is more of the thrill-seeker, he does not often think about his actions and acts on impulse. Pope is known as the “brains” of the group and he thinks everything through and is always planning ahead. Kiara was born as a Kook but decides to hang out with the Pogues, she gets along with everyone, but she also is very opinionated. Later in the show, Sarah Cameron joins the group as the love interest of John B. She is a Kook and has some bad history with Kiara. Her dad, Ward also plays a big part in the show.
At the beginning of the show, Sarah Cameron is dating another Kook named Topper. Topper and his friends hate the Pogues and so when he suspects that John B. and Sarah have something going on, he convinces Ward that John B. was stealing gear from his boat. Ward then fires John B., who blames Sarah Cameron for it.
Due to the major rivalry between the Kooks and the Pogues they go through many disputes and have to figure out a way to keep peace on the island. Each group has a specific side of the island that they are designated to, the Pogues live on the south side also named “The Cut” and the Kooks live on “Figure 8”.
