Some of the Best, but Most of the Worst Red Carpet Outfits

This year’s Grammy red carpet looks were certainly…something. Between political statements and cowboy fashion, some celebrities really brought the wow factor; others, however, left us in boredom as singers wore what seemed to be their grandma’s window curtains.
One controversial moment was when Joy Villa stepped onto the carpet in a very right-leaning dress–yes, the political kind. The dress itself looked like a long strip of red elastic material with duck taped words that spelt out “TRUMP” on the front and “IMPEACHED AND RE-ELECTED” on the back. While the singer is absolutely entitled to her own opinion, the dress itself reflected a lack of fashion as she also sported a huge red feather and a tacky clutch.
What Rosalía lacked in style, Lil Nas X made up for. The two sported cowboy-esque outfits, but one was definitely better than the other. Reminiscent of Sigourney Weaver as the Warden in Holes, Rosalía showed up to the red carpet in a red dress with fringe, a look that missed the mark by a long shot. Lil Nas X skipped on the fringe and appeared in a hot pink cropped jacket with matching pants. Not only was it very on-brand for him, it also brought pizzazz desperately needed to spice up the red carpet.
It seems that Priyanka Chopra decided to cop her dress from her grandmother’s house before hitting up the red carpet. The dress resembled curtains, adorned with floral embroidery and more of the fringe that is ever so popular this year. We have a word of advice for Chopra–please leave the window treatments at home next year.
Despite their amazing dance skills, BTS lacked a groovy fit on the carpet. The group showed up wearing the most unrevolutionary piece of clothing ever: a trench coat. The off-brand Steve Jobs turtlenecks did not make their looks any better. Overall, BTS did not get a B, but an F.
You may not have noticed that Dua Lipa walked the red carpet. We don’t blame you. Her plain white slip dress was so boring that the highlight of her outfit was her grown-out roots. Two small slits in the dress were not enough to save it from the catacombs of dullness.
Gwen Stefani seemingly headed to the beach before she took a stroll on the red carpet. Her dress was embroidered with beads and shells, and as intricate as the pattern was, any elegance it brought was squashed by the awkward silhouette. A less stiff dress would have worked well, but as it stands, Stefani looks more like a sand castle than a Grammy nominee.
Lana Del Ray admitted to getting her dress from the mall, and honey, we can tell. Although it was the most sustainable option, the dress looked like a 1920s flapper dress that was trying to be a piece of art; not even Norman Rockwell would approve.
The best of the worst looks was by Maggie Rogers who wore a full length black dress with gold stars stitched into the fabric. The stars themselves resembled the ones we used to draw in kindergarten. Not only that, but Rogers carried a matching gold metal water bottle in her purse. At the very least she was being sustainable, like our girl Lana, but her dress overall did not sustain our looks for long before we diverted attention to other celebrity looks.
While Maggie Rogers wore the best of the worst, Lizzo wore the worst of the best. Although a little tacky, her dress gave off classic Old Hollywood vibes. We also loved the polar bear she exploited for her shawl! Lizzo should take a note from Del Ray and Rogers when it comes to being environmentally friendly. The polar bears would appreciate it.
Thankfully, there were celebrities who did not disappoint. “I see it. I like it. I want it. I got it.” Ariana Grande chose a stunning dress for the red carpet that made her look like a warrior princess. With a wide skirt made of a smoky colored tool, she truly encompassed beauty and bravery after a trying last year and a half.
Another stunner was Billie Eilish who arrived in a classic yet iconic fit. The artist wore an oversized green Gucci suit to match her green roots. While she did not deserve all five of the Grammys, her outfit was a 10/10.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner stepped out in opposing outfits. Jonas was spotted in a dark patterned suit that was interesting–this time in a good way. The same cannot be said for Turner, who seemingly stopped by Forever 21 and H&M before visiting the carpet. The short frilly skirt and chevron collared tank top takes us back to our middle school days, not to a standout red carpet look.
Although all of the artists who walked the carpet have incredible musical talent, many of their fashion senses are lacking. Both Lil Nas X and Rosalía walked away not only with awards for music, but also for best and worst dressed.
In our opinion, Lil Nas X best encompassed style, fun, and the cowboy emoji at the Grammys, while Rosalía looked like the thrifted version. Thank God the Grammys are for music, and not fashion, otherwise almost all the nominees would be going home.
