Adam Sandler Turns to Crime and Uncensored Acts

Araceli Quino Acho

Uncut Gems was released on Christmas day, December 25th, 2019. Starring comedian Adam Sandler playing Howard Ratner. When most people hear about a new movie with Sandler and expect his character role to make people laugh. Uncut Gems, a rated-R crime, and mystery film is not at all the type of movie you would expect from the comedian.

Directors Josh and Benny Safdie always imagined Sandler playing Howard Ratner, a Jewish jeweler addicted to gambling and involved in some deep deals owing people money, who aggressively harassing and pressure him for their money back. Howard makes a bet that could lead to his downfall or gain a high profit. Howard’s family is not his top priority compared to his money-making business and his younger girlfriend, Julia (Julia Fox). His wife, Dinah, (Idina Menzel) does not get along with her husband, and if she had it her way, she would never see his “annoying face”. The Weeknd also appears, playing himself as a rising artist back in 2012.

The movie involved many other known celebrities, like Howard’s assistant and middleman, Demany (Lakeith Stanfield). Similarly to The Weeknd, Kevin Garnett, a former American Professional basketball player in the NBA League, plays himself in the past. The Boston Celtics basketball player plays a central role in Howards bet to the story development and build-up, he also takes a liking to a valuable rare stone Howard had bought.

The film landed the Safdie brothers a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Director, although the comedian had been awarded no Oscar awards at all. During an interview last year, Adam Sandler said  “If I don’t get it, I’m going to f–ing come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay.” However, the Sandman (Sandler’s nickname) did not frown and grump over the loss of an Oscar,  he congratulated his friends who got nominated, also jokingly tweeted “Bad news: Sandman gets no love from the academy, good news: Sandman can stop wearing suits.”

If you’re a fan of Adam Sandler, seeing him in a whole new light of crimes and uncensored acts is a bit surprising, Sandler has always been recognized as a hilarious guy, the clown in the movie, although there are a few jokes here and there, it should be recognized an oscar for the perfect funny moment in a tense scene, for screenwriting and acting.
