Talent hit the stage at the winter choir concert with the choir students singing everything from holiday music to the classic tune, “My Favorite Things.” The T.C. Choir Winter Concert was a huge success. It took place on December 11 in a packed auditorium. The auditorium was filled with a seemingly enthusiastic crowd that was there to support the choir. Parents, grandparents and friends were there, eagerly awaiting for some of their seniors to give their last winter choir performance.
Choir offers three different choir classes: Concert choir (the freshman choir class), Mixed Choir (students in all grades) and Advanced Choir (admission by audition only.) All choirs performed in “The Star Spangled Banner” “Candlelight Cannon” and the “Holiday Opening Medley.” Sophomore Kaleigh Andrews said “It was really stressful to prepare but when we finally performed the weight was lifted off our shoulders.”
The advanced choir performed many traditional songs as well as putting a modern twist in a classic such as “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music . “My Favorite Things” was performed by the women in advanced choir. This ensemble is called Colore Dolce, meaning sweet color in Spanish. The choir consists of 18 seniors and many had their shining moments in the “Holiday Opening Medley”, which had five senior solos. Sophomore Emily Surratt said “The Holiday Opening Medley was my favorite song because I loved hearing the solos that I know my classmates worked so hard to get.”
Choir director Theodore Thorpe III is in his ninth cyear as director. Thorpe proudly told the audience about his students, especially the seniors the choir that will be saying goodbye to later this year. Thorpe reflected on the concert saying“I thought they [the choir] performed very well and worked very hard throughout the year.”
The finale is an annual tradition at the T.C. Winter Concert. The song was “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” where Thorpe invited all choir alumni to come up on stage and sing this classic song. Students from classes of 2018, 2017, 2011, and 2012 went on to the stage to support the choir that meant so much to them in their high school years. “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” had the audience on their feet in a standing ovation.
Thorpe is now focusing on the spring season and the National Choir Festival that will take place in March, in Indianapolis, Indiana. This festival could possibly qualify the choir for the World Choir Games in Belgium that would take place in 2020. The choir is considering attending Orlando Festival this year in Orlando, Florida.
