We are all aware of diversity within our division. But are we all aware of what it really means to culturally competent within the environment in which we work?
Cultural competence is a key factor in enabling educators to be effective with students from cultures other than their own. It is traditionally defined as “a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that enable professionals to work effectively in cross cultural situations.”
But how do we know when we are doing it well?
Cultural competency is a process that begins with an awareness of one’s own cultural identity and views about difference. This awareness informs practices, affecting the ways staff interacts with students, families and colleagues, particularly those representing different cultures. Cultural competency closes achievement gaps by:
- Providing a framework for staff to culturally responsive practices
- Building on the varying cultural and community norms of students and their families
- Honoring the uniqueness of each individual
- Ensuring instruction and opportunities that teach to and through the specific cultural, economic, linguistic, racial, and social, nuances of students
- Preparing lifelong learners, critical thinkers and informed citizens who are able to address the challenges of their times
