Superintendent Alvin L. Crawley has appointed Victor Powell as the new principal of Matthew Maury Elementary School.
Powell, who is currently an assistant principal at Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School, is credited with helping to boost reading and mathematics benchmarks at the schools where he has previously worked. He is known for having a steady hand in his leadership roles at Tucker and other schools where he has served in administrative roles.
“We are excited to have Mr. Powell join Maury as the new principal. He is someone who has proven himself in the time that he has been with ACPS and is ready to take on the leadership of a school. His experience in boosting academic achievement speaks for itself,” said Superintendent Crawley.
Powell is the third assistant principal in the past few weeks to be offered the leadership of a school. The ACPS 2020 Strategic Plan aims to identify, grow and develop exemplary staff into leaders within the school division.
“My core goal in life is to inspire, connect and educate the students, teachers, parents and community around me by demonstrating high integrity and a strong commitment to diverse settings. By establishing and maintaining professional relationships with parents, employees and the community, I believe I can build a strong learning community as a building principal,” said Powell.
Powell joined ACPS as assistant principal at Tucker in July 2015. Prior to that he was an assistant principal at Park View High School in Loudoun County for three years where he supported instructional audits and interactive achievement to get the school out of warning status for English Learners and Specialized Instruction. He has also been a dean at the high school level.
Powell originally trained as a math teacher. One of the highlights of his career is increasing the sixth-grade math scores at Warrenton Middle School in Fauquier County from 35 percent to 95 percent over the course of a single year.
Powell will start in the role on July 1.
