Each year, ACPS sponsors a Holiday Giving Tree program for students and families who are struggling financially. Since 2014, this program has ensured that many students who would otherwise not receive gifts have a wonderful holiday season.
In the past, individual staff sponsors from Central Office and some schools would be paired with a student and give new clothing, toys or other items on the student’s wish list. This year we are inviting all ACPS staff and the broader community to participate in the giving and spread a little holiday magic.
If you are interested in spreading a little holiday cheer — and we really hope you are! — please register online and you will be matched with a student/family. Sponsors must deliver gift items to ACPS Central Office at 1340 Braddock Place by Friday, December 14 in order to ensure delivery of the gifts to students and families before schools close for the holiday break on Friday, December 20. Sponsors and students remain anonymous to each other.
If you are not in a position to sponsor a family, consider giving the gift of your time. You can:
- Lay wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery and other locations with Wreaths Across America on December 14.
- Help the Alexandria Department of Community and Human Services with their holiday sharing gift distribution.
- Distribute meals through the Capital Area Food Bank distribution program.
Learn more and sign up for these or other volunteer opportunities online through Volunteer Alexandria.
