There are more than 400 policies that the School Board must review every five years. To keep up with changes in laws affecting education, however, many of them are revised more frequently. In the last two years, the School Board approved nearly 100 policy changes, and this year more than 100 are scheduled for review. To support equity throughout ACPS, the Board has also begun translating its policies into Spanish, Amharic and Arabic.

Staff Health Policy Change
Did you know the School Board updated Policy GBE: Staff Health (PDF) in June to include guidelines for staff members who are ill or who require medical attention at work?
In keeping with ACPS’ longstanding illness guidelines for students, if you experience these symptoms you should closely assess your ability to work:
- Fever of 101 or higher in the last 24 hours without medication;
- Undiagnosed rash that is accompanied by fever or itching;
- Frequent coughing or difficulty breathing;
- Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours;
- Sore throat, with fever or swollen glands in the neck;
- Symptoms of being sick such as being unusually tired, irritable, or weak; or
- Any symptoms related to a mental health crisis.
All staff are encouraged to use judgment in remaining at work when ill. If you experience a medical emergency at work that results in a 911 call, you may refuse transport by EMS. However, if you do, you must still seek medical attention or return home via safe transportation. You may not remain at the school.
Do you want to be involved in the policy making process?
This year the School Board will discuss policy revisions at periodic work sessions, and your input is welcomed. Staff can weigh in on policy issues:
- During the public comment portion of each Board meeting (sign up here);
- On the School Board’s new online policy input form (coming soon);
- By joining a School Board Advisory Committee.
All School Board meetings and work sessions are open to staff, and are held at ACPS Central Office at 1340 Braddock Place. They are generally held on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm. See the schedule.
Policies are next scheduled to be discussed at the October 24, 2019 work session. View the work session agenda (available starting on October 18).
