In ACPS we are raising teacher efficacy in best practices in math and growing our teacher leaders in our schools.
If you are ready to take your mathematics teaching to the next level, the Mathematics Education Leadership program at George Mason University may be for you!
A new fully online Math Specialist Cohort Program is forming that would enable candidates to apply for the VDOE K-8 Math Specialist add-on endorsement. Participants in the program would gain a strong background in math content, instructional strategies and school-based leadership.
The program prepares graduates for leadership in the improvement of mathematics education at all levels in public and private schools, colleges and universities. It emphasizes research and scholarly activity in mathematics learning, mathematics teacher learning and curriculum reform.
The Mathematics Education Leadership Program offers a concentration in mathematics education at the Master’s Degree level, and a specialization in mathematics education at the PhD level.
The 30-credit Math Specialist Leader K-8 concentration is unique for individuals who desire part-time study to become specialists in the teaching and leadership of school mathematics. Students in the Mathematics Education Leadership Master’s degree concentrations study teaching, research, curriculum and mathematics content. They also explore school-based leadership issues in mathematics education.
The application deadline for the Region IV Math Specialist Master’s cohort is November 1.
With enough participation, teachers can receive a locked-in tuition discount of 20%, bringing the total 30-credit master’s program cost to around $15,150, with most student fees exempted. With a Spring 2019 start, participants will graduate in Spring 2021. Please contact bburke5@gmu.edu for information about the cohort, program, or application.
There is also a specialization in Mathematics Education Leadership in the PhD in Education and Human Development Program. The PhD specialization focuses on issues in curriculum design and evaluation, the preparation and professional development of mathematics teachers, leadership in mathematics at all levels and the design and evaluation of mathematics education research. This program prepares individuals for high level leadership positions in mathematics education including: college/university faculty and researchers, school and central office leaders, curriculum and instructional materials developers, state and national agency leaders, and mathematics education consultants.
