We always appreciate our wonderful teachers who give their all every day to help our students in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and we look forward to celebrating them during Teacher Appreciation Week, which is May 2-6, 2022. This year’s theme in ACPS is “Simply the Best” and we know that our teachers are the best!
In 1944, Arkansas school teacher Mattye White Woodridge wrote to politicians and educational leaders to ask for a day to celebrate teachers. Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt convinced the U.S. Congress in 1953 that our nation needed a day to recognize how teachers help change their students’ lives for the better. We now celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in the first full week of May. Teacher Appreciation Day on May 5 is described by the National Education Association as “a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives.”
