- News and Announcements

In response to the public comments of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the growing concern about the impact of coronavirus in our community, we wanted to share the following information about ACPS’ coronavirus (COVID-19) planning. The CDC is asking school officials to prepare for a possible outbreak. At this time, there are no confirmed cases in Alexandria, Virginia, or the D.C. region. ACPS is working closely with local and regional health officials in the event that cases of COVID-19 are confirmed in our area.

ACPS has partnered with the Alexandria City Health Department and local first responders to form a COVID-19 Task Force Planning Committee to work closely to monitor this evolving situation. We plan to provide updates as we progress with this planning and work.

The Alexandria Health Department is reviewing its existing influenza response plan and making any necessary revisions to respond to COVID-19 scenarios. ACPS is also reviewing emergency plans which will be revised as additional information on COVID-19 becomes available.

Since the full impact of COVID-19 remains unclear, ACPS and our city partners are preparing for all scenarios. At this time, federal health authorities are not recommending that schools cancel classes. ACPS School Health Services is working with schools to be vigilant in monitoring the student body, especially in cases where students exhibit symptoms associated with the virus.

As a reminder, common cold and flu viruses are not unusual during the winter season. Precautions are recommended. We ask that everyone do their part to stay healthy. Wash hands frequently, monitor your health, and please keep your students home when they exhibit cold and flu-like symptoms.

Additional information on COVID-19 is available from The Alexandria Health Department, Virginia Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thank you for your support. We will continue to provide updates throughout this process.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr.
Superintendent, Alexandria City Public Schools
