September is National Attendance Awareness Month. We are asking staff to promote the message that Every Student Succeeds, When Every Student Attends and help our students get to school on time every day.
Did You Know?
- Celebrating good and improved attendance can positively impact student engagement and school climate.
- School attendance habits are developed as early as kindergarten.
- Children who are absent from school in kindergarten and first grade are much less likely to read on grade level by the end of third grade.
- School attendance habits in the ninth grade can be a strong indicator of students’ graduation or drop-out outcomes.
- School staff can promote positive attendance by recognizing students and families who have consistent attendance habits.
- A child is less likely to succeed academically if he or she is chronically absent. Missing just one school day every two weeks can place children at risk of academic failure.
- An absence from school, regardless of the reason, results in missed instruction and class time.
Ensuring positive school attendance is a collaborative effort which requires students, ACPS staff and parents to work together. Positive and consistent communication is a very important part of this collaborative process.
