As we head into winter break, ACPS would like to remind everyone of the critical health and safety measures needed to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.

The Dec. 16 School Board meeting will be the final one for six Board members who have completed their terms serving on the Alexandria City School Board.

The ACPS Finding Fit Coordinators and Human Resources team traveled throughout our school division this week to congratulate our Wellness Bingo Raffle winners and present them with a gift bag of wellness products!

Volunteers are needed for the upcoming Alexandria City Science Fair 2022 on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022 at Alexandria City High School. The Science Fair is a great opportunity to see our students in grades 7-12 in action as they showcase their projects.

On Dec. 7, Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. sent a message via email to staff and families to remind our school community about ACPS school safety and security. In this video, Dr. Hutchings addresses ACPS’ commitment to taking the actions necessary to safeguard the physical well-being and mental health of our students and staff, and emphasizes that everyone in our school community plays a role in helping to keep our schools safe.

Gov. Ralph Northam launched his “Thank You, Virginia” tour at Alexandria City High School (ACHS) Monday, announcing that he will propose a two-year state budget with record funding for public education, including a 10 percent pay raise for teachers.

Margaret Browne joined Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) this month as the Director of Recruitment and Retention for the Department of Human Resources (HR). Ms. Browne has worked in education since 2006 and is experienced in HR competencies and strategies, including training, resource development and critical evaluation.

While our area has yet to experience much winter weather in the 2021-22 school year, ACPS has planned for the days when in-person instruction may not be possible. The ACPS Express edition on Dec. 3 explained the winter weather decisions and communications so families understand the notification process and the continuation of learning during these unforeseen winter weather conditions.

The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has announced that health care providers, pharmacies and AHD are now offering COVID-19 boosters to all vaccinated residents over 18 years of age.

At ACPS, we are thankful for things big and small. This heartwarming video includes our students and staff reflecting on what they are thankful for as well as a special message to all ACPS families and staff from Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr.

With the support of the School Board, ACPS is shortening the length of quarantine for close contacts to seven days after the date of last exposure if staff provide documentation to their supervisor of a negative COVID PCR test that is administered on day five, six, or seven.

ACPS is celebrating the rollout of five new electric school buses to join its 118-vehicle fleet. The electric buses were purchased by ACPS with the assistance of the Dominion Energy Electric School Bus Program. ACPS purchased five of the 50 buses that were part of this program.

The school division is fortunate to have 10 school-based parent liaisons and three division-wide parent liaisons, specializing in Spanish, Amharic and Arabic. 

ACPS salutes our substitute teachers as we celebrate National Substitute Educators Day today (Nov. 19). Substitute teachers continue to provide quality education to students in the temporary absence of their classroom teacher. They are flexible, resilient and dedicated as they provide continuation in a child’s education.

Submit your nomination by Dec. 15 for the Licensed Specialists category. This group includes ACPS psychologists, diagnosticians, nurses, therapists, counselors, social workers, athletic trainers, and technology integration specialists. A winner will be announced in the first week of January 2022.

ACPS is proud to announce that Chief of School and Community Relations Julia Burgos has been recognized by the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) as a Front-Runner who embodies leadership, innovation and excellence.

ACPS is proud to announce the first recipients of the VIP Award for employees who stand out for their Vision, Integrity and Passion. The winners were selected from the October nomination category focusing on Transportation, Nutrition Services and Building Engineers.

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. has proposed a fiscally responsible Capital Improvement Program budget (CIP) of $495,004,800 for the next 10 years that focuses on addressing the division’s capacity needs and supporting instructional excellence in our schools.
