Governor Ralph Northam Visits ACHS to Announce Proposal to Increase Teacher Pay
Gov. Ralph Northam launched his “Thank You, Virginia” tour at Alexandria City High School (ACHS) Monday, announcing that he will propose a two-year state budget with record funding for public education, including a 10 percent pay raise for teachers.
Welcome Margaret Browne, Human Resources Director of Recruitment and Development
Margaret Browne joined Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) this month as the Director of Recruitment and Retention for the Department of Human Resources (HR). Ms. Browne has worked in education since 2006 and is experienced in HR competencies and strategies, including training, resource development and critical evaluation.
ACPS Winter Weather Virtual Learning
While our area has yet to experience much winter weather in the 2021-22 school year, ACPS has planned for the days when in-person instruction may not be possible. The ACPS Express edition on Dec. 3 explained the winter weather decisions and communications so families understand the notification process and the continuation of learning during these unforeseen winter weather conditions.

Shortened Staff Quarantine Period with Negative PCR Test
With the support of the School Board, ACPS is shortening the length of quarantine for close contacts to seven days after the date of last exposure if staff provide documentation to their supervisor of a negative COVID PCR test that is administered on day five, six, or seven.
ACPS Introduces New Electric Buses to Transportation Fleet
ACPS is celebrating the rollout of five new electric school buses to join its 118-vehicle fleet. The electric buses were purchased by ACPS with the assistance of the Dominion Energy Electric School Bus Program. ACPS purchased five of the 50 buses that were part of this program.

The school division is fortunate to have 10 school-based parent liaisons and three division-wide parent liaisons, specializing in Spanish, Amharic and Arabic.
National Substitute Educators Day
ACPS salutes our substitute teachers as we celebrate National Substitute Educators Day today (Nov. 19). Substitute teachers continue to provide quality education to students in the temporary absence of their classroom teacher. They are flexible, resilient and dedicated as they provide continuation in a child’s education.

Submit your nomination by Dec. 15 for the Licensed Specialists category. This group includes ACPS psychologists, diagnosticians, nurses, therapists, counselors, social workers, athletic trainers, and technology integration specialists. A winner will be announced in the first week of January 2022.
