Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) staff and students are hosting and moderating sessions at “Courageous Educational Leadership: Transform K-12 Education through Antiracism,” an interactive virtual conference being held June 27-29, 2022, through the American University School of Education Summer Institute on Education Equity and Justice.

The conference will thoroughly examine the intersection of racism in education through the voices and experiences of people of color. The forum brings together local and national educators and educational advocates to highlight new practices and strategies for addressing the educational needs of Black, brown and indigenous students.

ACPS Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. will be speaking at two sessions on the first two days. ACPS Executive Director of Equity and Alternative Programs Kennetra Wood is moderating a session with ACPS staff and students on the first day. Alexandria City High School (ACHS) Theatre Teacher Leslie A. Jones is moderating a session on the second day. ACHS Academy 2 Administrator for Instruction and Student Support Christopher Thompson is moderating a session with ACPS staff on day three.

This conference is open to K-12 educators, legislators, education advocates, parents, students, school board members and members at community-based organizations. Participants who register and obtain tickets will be provided links to live-stream all sessions in advance. All sessions will be closed captioned. Full recordings of the sessions will be made available to registered attendees.

ACPS has 20 spots available for ACPS staff on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please reach out to Leslie Jones at ljones@acps.k12.va.us if interested in registering for the event.
