Tonight, ACPS is holding the first community meeting regarding the new West End school.
ACPS is moving towards purchasing the building in the early spring and beginning the remodeling work of the building in the summer.
The plan is to purchase and retrofit the office building at 1701 N. Beauregard, making substantial changes to the inside to convert it into an elementary school for 650 students. The purchase would include the parking garage adjacent to the building, part of which would be converted into outdoor space for students at the school. The new West End school is expected to be ready to open in time for the start of the school year in fall 2018.
As space in urban settings becomes more constrained, other school divisions have already proven that this model works. One example of office space converted to a school is Bailey’s Upper Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences in Fairfax School Division.
Bailey’s Upper Elementary School let ACPS take video and photographs of their school to show our families how this can be done.
