Last week, Mount Vernon Community School launched Bicycling in Schools, a pilot program through which physical education teachers lead upper elementary students through a comprehensive seven-session bicycling unit emphasizing appropriate safety and bicycling skills.
The unit will culminate with a “field trip” where students and teachers head off-campus for an extended ride. Over $7,000 has been raised by the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which has enabled us to provide new bikes, helmets and various related resources for the program. This program is in keeping with our ACPS2020 Strategic Plan Goal 5: Health and Wellness – ACPS will promote efforts to enable students to be healthy and ready to learn.
