ACPS Takes Precaution of Testing Drinking Water in Schools

ACPS took the precaution of testing the drinking water in all schools over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The decision to test the water is proactive. ACPS has no cause for concern and is not aware of higher than usual lead levels in the area.

The decision was taken following a recent meeting with Virginia American Water, which supplies water to Alexandria. Samples were collected from all 22 facilities occupied by ACPS students and staff. Results of the tests are expected in mid to late June and will be made public as soon as possible.

Several draw points were identified within each building, including food preparation areas and drinking fountains. Staff was trained in procedures as to how to collect the samples.

The Memorial Day holiday was selected for collecting samples as the building water needs to have been undisturbed for 12 to 18 hours prior to sampling. Samples will be sent to an independent laboratory for analysis.

The decision to test drinking water in schools as a precaution was made after public interest in lead levels in Flint, Michigan rose to national attention.
