As our nation processes the tragic loss of students and teachers to gun violence in Texas this week, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) joins with community partners to stand against gun violence by wearing orange to recognize this year’s Wear Orange Weekend June 3-5, 2022. The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance. As part of our commitment to providing a safe learning and working environment, students, educators and staff are invited to wear orange in honor of those who have lost their lives to violence. The community is asked to join in keeping our children safe by ensuring they never have unsupervised access to firearms.

“An essential part of home safety is secure firearm storage,” Director of ACPS Safety and Security Services John Contreras said. “As we observe Wear Orange day, it can serve as a reminder of the lives that can be saved when guns and ammunition are secured and stored in lock boxes, out of the hands of minors.”

As a community partner for Wear Orange Weekend 2022, the Alexandria PTA Council (PTAC) joins with the National PTA and its members in advocating for sensible gun safety and prevention policies to help keep children safe.

The community can join Alexandria’s Wear Orange Rally at Market Square (300 King Street) on Fri., June 3, 2022, at 7 p.m. to help raise awareness about this public health concern. This event will include survivors, nonprofit community partners, grassroots activists, students and elected officials.
