Congratulations to Charles Barrett Elementary School’s Stephanie Kessinger, who has been selected as a Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM) William C. Lowry Math Educator of the Year recipient.
“Mrs. Kessinger is a phenomenal math teacher,” says Charles Barrett Elementary School Assistant Principal Marcella Ahern, who nominated Kessinger for the award. “She is able to meet students where they are and help close the gaps in their math learning. She effectively differentiates for students’ needs and makes math engaging and relevant.”
In addition to her dedication to her fifth-grade students and her colleagues, Kessinger worked with George Mason University and the Virginia Department of Education on finding and creating rich tasks, routines and games for the Bridging for Math Strength website.
This VCTM award is in honor of Dr. William Carl Lowry, a renowned Virginia mathematics teacher whose life’s work was devoted to the subject. Dr. Lowry is said to have had a greater impact in promoting mathematics education in the Commonwealth than any other educator.
