Virginia will recognize Crossing Guard Appreciation Day on Wednesday, Feb. 9, and this year, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) has additional cause to celebrate.
The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program has honored Cora Reed, crossing guard at Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy, as Virginia’s Most Outstanding Crossing Guard. Reed was one of five crossing guards across the state to be recognized. Reed will receive a letter, certificate and gift from the Virginia SRTS program in recognition of her service.
For nearly 50 years, Reed has taken care of the students at Lyles-Crouch and other ACPS schools. She is an integral part of the school community and is vital in the drop-off and pick-up process at the school. She has a positive and encouraging attitude and is a friend to all. Reed teaches students proper pedestrian behaviors and encourages them to make use of the crosswalk. She is reliable and always willing to serve in all weather conditions.
“I want to congratulate Cora Reed on being named one of Virginia’s Most Outstanding Crossing Guards! We appreciate her many years of service to our students and are thrilled that she is being recognized for all she does to make sure our students can get to school safely,” said Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy Principal Dr. Patricia Zissios.
On Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, ACPS will recognize the valuable role that all crossing guards play in our school communities. These safety superheroes greet students on their way to and from school and encourage lasting habits for Alexandria City Public Schools Safe Routes to School.
With crossing guard shortages throughout our communities this year, it is all the more important to show our appreciation for their service. If you know someone who would like to be a crossing guard, the Alexandria City Police Department has current openings at our schools.
